Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Clubs
January 21st, 2014
Martin Luther King Day of Service was designated by Congress in 1994 transforming the holiday into a National Day of Service. They ask for volunteers to take part in a day that keeps alive the legacy of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
To honor this year's MLK Day of Service, Club members at Paul I. Phillips watched Martin Luther King, Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech. Afterwards, we posed them this question: “What would Martin Luther King Jr. take a picture of if he had a smart phone?” They thought about what would be important enough for him to record and share with the world if he were alive today. What do you think???
Other Club members wrote letters to veterans thanking them for their service, made "I Have a Dream" mobiles, and wrote and read aloud "I Have a Dream" speeches.
January's Youth of the Month!
January 20th, 2014
Our Youth of the Month (YOM) program spotlights a Club member who truly represents the mission of our Clubs. Staff will decide on a YOM based on their involvement in different activities and behavior. It is a program that helps to build our participation in the national Youth of the Year program.
Congratulations to January's Youth of the Month Winners:
Scotty, Age 15
Why Staff Selected Scotty: This kid is awesome. He helps all Staff no matter what. He's just that type of kid that wants to be here at the Club. He has a bright future ahead. We all voted for Scotty for Youth of the Month. Way to go Scotty!
De'montrel, Age 9
Why Staff Selected De'montrel: He has been making good decisions and helping out around the Club as well as taking on an active role in the Learning Center and Game Room.
Paul I. Phillips:
Shavion, Age 12
Why Staff Selected Shavion: Shavion is a “go to” kid. You can usually find him in the Art Room helping or working on projects. If a Staff member needs assistance in any area, Shavion is the first call and is always willing to help. He is fantastic at giving tours to new families and potential Club members. We are proud to award him with our first YOM award, and we won’t be surprised if he receives this again soon.

Seth Matthews as Griffins Stick Boy!
January 18th, 2014
Every year at the BE GREAT Gala, several amazing auction items end up going home in the hands of our wonderful supporters! At the 2013 event, Bruce and Candace Matthews made the day for their son Seth when they won the Grand Rapids Griffins Package during the live auction. Seth recently redeemed his winnings and lived up the opportunity to be the Official Stick Boy for a Griffins game! We love seeing our supporters benefit from all that they give back! Thanks for making a difference Matthews Family! See more photos on our Facebook page.
